France

Alsace's fairytale half-timbered towns meet a soaring Gothic cathedral and Christmas markets dating back centuries, right on the German border.

Currency Euro (€)
Best time to visit May–June and September are mildest for exploring on foot, with fewer crowds than summer. Late November through December brings Strasbourg's famous Christmas market but cold, often damp weather; January–February is chilly and greyer.
Practical tips
  • French is the main language; English is common in tourist areas but less so away from them.
  • Standard European plug (two round pins, Type C/E), 230V.
  • A service charge is usually already included in restaurant bills (service compris) — rounding up is appreciated but not obligatory.
  • Many museums and shops close on Mondays; some smaller shops also close for a midday break.
