Wrocław

A colourful riverside city of islands, bridges and a lively Market Square, with a Gothic Old Town Hall, hundreds of little bronze dwarfs and a UNESCO-listed Centennial Hall.

Plan my trip

Best time to visit: May to September is best: long days, riverside terraces on the Odra and open-air cafes on the Market Square. Wrocław is a student city, so evenings stay lively through the academic year. In late November the Christmas market opens on the Market Square (21 November 2025 to 7 January 2026 last season; 2026/27 dates are announced in autumn) and is the main winter draw. Winters are cold and grey, but the museums and cafes are warm. Remember the Polish public holidays (1 November, 11 November, 24-26 December, 1 January, 6 January, Easter 28-29 March 2027, 1 and 3 May) when many museums are closed.

Getting your bearings: The Old Town with the Market Square (Rynek) is the heart of the city, about 1.5 km from the main station Wrocław Główny and fully walkable. The Odra and its canal wrap around the centre; Ostrów Tumski with the cathedral and the Sand Island lie a short walk north-east across the river. The Centennial Hall, Japanese Garden, Multimedia Fountain and Zoo are 3-5 km east of the Market Square and best reached by tram. Look for the small bronze dwarfs (krasnale) all over the centre. Trams and buses cover everything; the airport is served by bus 106.

Each winter wooden huts fill the Market Square around the Old Town Hall, selling mulled wine, grilled sausages, gingerbread, handmade decorations and gifts. The 2025 edition ran from 21 November 2025 to 7 January 2026, daily 10:00-21:00; it was closed on 24 and 25 December and on 1 January, opened at 13:00 on 26 December, and on 31 December the shopping huts closed at 17:00 while food and drink stalls stayed open until 02:00. The 2026/27 dates are announced in the autumn, so check the city website before you go. The Rynek tram stop is served by lines 3, 6, 7, 10, 12, 13 and 18, and from Wrocław Główny the Market Square is about 1.5 km, a 20-minute walk. Come on a weekday afternoon for fewer crowds and dress warmly.
