Vienna

The imperial capital of palaces, coffeehouses, and world-class opera, where Mozart's melodies still linger around every corner.

Best time to visit: May–June and September–October are the classic times for palaces and coffeehouses without summer crowds; the Wiener Christkindlmarkt runs 13 November to 26 December for a genuinely magical winter visit.

🎄 Christmas Market

Wiener Christkindlmarkt (Christmas Markets)

The Wiener Christkindlmarkt at Rathausplatz is one of Europe's largest and best-known Christmas markets, running in front of the illuminated neo-Gothic City Hall since 1975 with around 150 stalls selling ornaments, mulled wine (Punsch), roasted chestnuts and Lebkuchen beneath a walk-through avenue of lit trees. The adjoining 3,000m2 Vienna Ice Dream rink adds a genuine winter-sports element right next to the market. Vienna also runs many smaller, distinct markets worth splitting time between: the craft-focused Spittelberg market in its cobbled Biedermeier lanes, and the grounds of Schönbrunn Palace, which run their own separate Christmas market through early January. Note that the Belvedere Palace market is paused for 2026 due to planned construction work.

2026 dates: 13 November - 26 December, daily 10:00-22:00 (Dec 24 shortened to 10:00-18:30). Spittelberg runs 13 Nov-23 Dec (Mon-Fri 14:00-21:30, weekends/holidays 11:00-21:30); Schönbrunn runs 6 Nov 2026-6 Jan 2027 (daily 10:00-21:00, shorter hours Dec 24 and from Dec 25). Exact hours can shift slightly year to year — double-check closer to your trip.
10:00–22:00 · Free to enter; food, drink and craft items paid per stall; Eistraum ice rink admission separate
