Vianden & the North

A fairy-tale hilltop castle above a river town, a chairlift over the Our valley, and the forests, castles and war museums of the Luxembourg Ardennes (Éislek) around it.

Plan my trip

Best time to visit: May to September is the easiest season: Vianden Castle opens 10:00-18:00 from April to September, the chairlift runs daily from 4 July to 30 August, and the Our valley is green and good for walking. The Vianden Medieval Festival fills the castle and the old town in late July to early August (25 July to 2 August in 2026; guided castle tours are not possible during it). In October the Nut Market (Nëssmoort) takes over the town (Sunday 11 October in 2026). In winter the castle closes at 16:00, the chairlift is closed and many museums keep shorter hours, but the village Christmas market on the Saturday before the first Advent is charming. Luxembourg's public holidays (1 January, Easter Monday 29 March 2027, 1 May, Ascension 6 May 2027, Whit Monday 17 May 2027, 23 June, 15 August, 1 November, 25-26 December) can change opening hours.

Getting your bearings: Vianden is a small castle town in a bend of the Our river on the German border, in the Éislek (the Luxembourg Ardennes). Almost everything in town lies along the Grand-Rue, which runs uphill from the Our bridge to the castle, with the Trinitarian church, the history museum and the Victor Hugo House on the way, and the chairlift station on the Our side. The wider region is spread out: Diekirch and Ettelbruck lie about 15-20 minutes to the south in the Sûre valley, Bourscheid castle sits above the river between them and Wiltz, and Clervaux, Wiltz and Esch-sur-Sûre with its lake are 30-60 minutes to the west and north. Public transport in Luxembourg is free, but rural bus lines (RGTR) are infrequent in the evenings and on Sundays, so check the return time on mobiliteit.lu; Vianden is reached by bus K52 from Ettelbruck or Diekirch.

🎄 Christmas Market

Vianden Christmas Market (Veiner Krëstmoort)

Vianden's Christmas market is a cosy one-day event held on the Saturday before the first Advent Sunday, on Place Vic Abens in the centre of the town. In 2025 it ran on 29 November from 14:00 to 20:00, with about ten stands run by local clubs serving Flammkuchen, soup, grilled meat, mulled wine and mulled mead, plus handmade crafts, honey and soap, live music, a big tree and a visit from Saint Nicholas for the children. The same pattern points to Saturday 28 November 2026, but confirm the date with the Vianden tourist office before you plan around it. The square is a few minutes' walk from the bus stops, and some stalls are cash only, so bring a few euros.

One Saturday before the first Advent Sunday: 29 November 2025, 14:00-20:00. The 2026 edition is expected on Saturday 28 November.
14:00–20:00 · Free entry; food and drinks paid at the stalls
