Toruń
A UNESCO-listed medieval brick town on the Vistula, birthplace of Copernicus and home of Poland's famous gingerbread, with a lively Old Town Market Square.
Best time to visit: Late spring to early autumn is the most comfortable time, with terraces on the Old Town Market Square and boat trips on the Vistula (April to October). Late August brings the Bella Skyway Festival, when light installations and projections turn the Old Town into an open-air gallery after dark. In late November the Christmas market opens on the Market Square (21 November to 21 December in 2025; 2026 dates are announced in autumn) and the smell of gingerbread is everywhere. Winters are cold and quiet, but the museums, which close earlier at 16:00 from October to April, are warm. Remember the Polish public holidays (1 November, 11 November, 24-26 December, 1 January, 6 January, Easter 28-29 March 2027, 1 and 3 May) when museums may be closed.
Getting your bearings: Toruń is a UNESCO-listed medieval city on the right bank of the Vistula, and its compact Old Town and New Town, each with its own market square, are completely walkable. The main station Toruń Główny is on the opposite bank, about 3 km from the Market Square; Toruń Miasto station is only a 10-15 minute walk from the Old Town across the bridge. The sights cluster around the Old Town Market Square with the Town Hall, Copernicus's birth house and the cathedral, with the Vistula boulevard, the Teutonic castle ruins and the Leaning Tower along the southern walls. Toruń is the home of Copernicus (born here in 1473) and of famous spiced gingerbread, so expect both on every corner. Most museums belong to the District Museum, which gives one free-admission weekday for permanent exhibitions at each branch.
Toruń Christmas Market (Old Town Market Square)
Each winter the Old Town Market Square around the Town Hall fills with wooden huts selling Toruń gingerbread, mulled wine, grilled food, handmade decorations and gifts, with a stage programme and a lit tree. The 2025 edition ran from 21 November to 21 December, Monday to Thursday 12:00-21:00, Friday 12:00-22:00, Saturday 10:00-22:00 and Sunday 10:00-21:00. The 2026 dates and hours are announced by the city in the autumn, so check torun.pl before you go. The square is a 10 to 15 minute walk from Toruń Miasto station, and from Toruń Główny you cross the Vistula by bus or tram. Weekday afternoons are calmer, and a warm coat is essential.
