Heidelberg

Climb to the romantic ruins of Heidelberg Castle, wander the Philosophers' Walk, and soak up Germany's oldest university town.

Best time to visit: Spring and early autumn are best for the castle gardens and Philosophers' Walk; the Heidelberger Weihnachtsmarkt runs 23 November–22 December, with parts open into early January.

🎄 Christmas Market

Heidelberger Weihnachtsmarkt (Christmas Market)

Rather than one central market, Heidelberg's Weihnachtsmarkt is strung across six connected squares running the length of the Altstadt — Bismarckplatz, Universitätsplatz, Kornmarkt (the 'Winterwäldchen', with over 100 illuminated fir trees styled as a forest), Marktplatz by the Church of the Holy Spirit, and Karlsplatz (with a seasonal ice rink). What sets it apart is the setting: from almost every stall, the floodlit ruins of Heidelberg Castle glow on the hillside above the rooftops, especially striking at dusk. Expect mulled wine (Glühwein), roasted almonds and chestnuts, regional crafts, and a genuinely festive, walkable stretch rather than a single cramped square.

2026 dates: 23 Nov – 22 Dec 2026, though the Bismarckplatz and Kornmarkt 'Winterwäldchen' sections stay open later, through 1 Jan 2027 — researched Aug 2026 via heidelberg-guide.com and besteuropeanchristmasmarkets.com; confirm exact per-square hours closer to your trip.
11:00–21:00 · Free to enter; food, drink and the ice rink are paid per stall/session
