Esslingen am Neckar

One of Germany's best-preserved medieval towns — half-timbered lanes, hilltop vineyards, and a postcard-perfect Neckar Valley setting.

Best time to visit: Visit May–October for the terraced vineyards and half-timbered lanes; its combined medieval and Christmas market (24 Nov–22 Dec) is one of the most atmospheric in the region.

🎄 Christmas Market

Esslinger Mittelaltermarkt & Weihnachtsmarkt (Medieval Market & Christmas Market)

Esslingen runs two markets at once each winter across the same historic core — from the Altes and Neues Rathaus around the Marktplatz up to the Hafenmarkt. The Mittelaltermarkt (medieval market) is the headline draw: stallholders and performers in individually made period dress (long robes, cloaks, pointed shoes and felt hats) sell handcrafted wares, demonstrate old trades, and perform fire shows, juggling, rope-and-fabric acrobatics and medieval music on drums, hurdy-gurdy and bagpipe — lit by open flame and torchlight rather than the electric fairy-lights of a typical Christmas market. A torchlit procession up to the Esslinger Burg marks the winter solstice, with a bonfire, fire performance and dancing. Alongside it, a more conventional Weihnachtsmarkt fills out the rest of the old town with mulled wine, roasted chestnuts and standard stalls. Together they're regularly ranked among the most attractive Christmas markets in the German-speaking world, with roughly 180 stalls and around a million visitors over the season.
