Debrecen
Hungary's second city and the 'Calvinist Rome': a yellow Great Reformed Church on Kossuth Square, the Déri Museum and Reformed College, plus the Great Forest park with a zoo and a big thermal spa.
Best time to visit: Late spring to early autumn is the easiest time, with terraces on Piac Street, the zoo and the open-air pools of Aquaticum in the Great Forest. The big date is the Debrecen Flower Carnival around 20 August (Hungary's national day), when floats covered in flowers parade through the city and the Great Forest. Hortobágy day trips work best from late February to late October. Debrecen Advent runs from 20 November to 23 December 2026, with a Christmas market, a giant tree and an ice rink on Kossuth Square (the rink stays until 10 January 2027). Winters are cold, but the spa, museums and covered attractions stay warm. Remember the Hungarian public holidays (23 October, 1 November, 24-26 December, 31 December, 1 January, 15 March, Easter 28-29 March 2027, 1 May, Whit Monday 17 May 2027, 20 August) when many museums close or change hours; Mondays are the usual closing day.
Getting your bearings: Debrecen is Hungary's second-largest city and the historic capital of Calvinism, nicknamed the 'Calvinist Rome'. The compact centre is easy to walk: from the railway station it is about 1.3 km up Piac Street to Kossuth Square, where the yellow Great Reformed Church stands next to the Reformed College, with the Déri Museum and MODEM a few minutes away. Nagyerdő (the Great Forest) is a big park north of the centre with the zoo, the Aquaticum spa, the university and the botanical garden; tram line 1 runs from the station through the centre toward it, and the distance from Kossuth Square is about 2.5 to 3 km. Debrecen also has its own history of Hungarian independence: Lajos Kossuth proclaimed Hungary's independence in the Great Church in 1849.
Debrecen Advent (Kossuth Square Christmas market & ice rink)
Debrecen Advent takes over Kossuth Square and Piac Street in front of the Great Church, with wooden huts of food and crafts, a lit Christmas tree, an ice rink with a light-decorated bridge, a Baroque carousel, a small Christmas train and a children's nook. In 2026 the market runs from 20 November to 23 December: Monday to Thursday 11:00-20:00, Friday and Saturday 11:00-21:00, Sunday 11:00-20:00 and 23 December 11:00-19:00, while the ice rink stays open until 10 January 2027. Entry to the market is free; the rink is paid (2,000 HUF per entry in 2025) and skates can be rented. From the railway station it is about a 1.3 km walk up Piac Street, or take a city bus or tram toward the centre; festively lit trams run during the season. Weekday afternoons are calmer, and a warm coat is essential.

The twin-towered Great Church closes Kossuth Square and is the largest Protestant church in Hungary. Tour A covers the huge, plain nave, Kossuth's chair and the original Vizsoly Bible; the longer Tour B adds the attic, the bell chamber with the Rákóczi bell and the panoramic walkway and lookout in the towers. It is a 1.3 km walk up Piac Street from the railway station, or one stop by bus or tram toward the centre. Tourist visits pause during services, so check the hours board; the church also keeps shorter hours on some dates in autumn 2026.

Kossuth Square is the heart of Debrecen, a wide pedestrian space in front of the Great Church where trams glide through the middle. Look for the Kossuth monument, the pedestrian fountains, and the old town hall on the Piac Street side where Tourinform has its office at number 20. It is lovely at dusk when the church is lit, and in winter the Advent market and ice rink fill it. From the railway station it is a 1.3 km walk up Piac Street or a short bus or tram ride toward the centre.

It has terraces, shops, the Aranybika hotel, the old town hall with the Tourinform office at number 20 and several church spires including Saint Anne's and the Small Church. Saint Anne's Church (Szent Anna templom) Nice to have
Debrecen's main Catholic church, a Baroque building with twin towers near Piac Street.
Saint Anne's is the town's Baroque Catholic church, standing in Szent Anna Square just off Piac Street. It is a quieter contrast to the austere Calvinist Great Church, with a richly decorated interior. It is easiest to see on a Piac Street walk and it takes under half an hour. The interior is open for prayer and services, so be respectful and check with the parish for visiting times.
-
Reformed Small Church (Református Kistemplom) Nice to have
The 'Truncated Church' with a baroque body, a neo-Romanesque look and a tower you can climb since 2023.
The Small Church stands at the corner of Piac and Széchenyi Streets and is nicknamed the Truncated Church because a storm in 1907 destroyed its onion-shaped spire. Since 2023 visitors can climb the tower, which has a fire watchman's room, a working 1931 mechanical clock and a terrace with a 360-degree view over the centre. Tower visits pause during religious services, and the tower has an entry fee paid at the site. It is on the Piac Street walk, a few minutes from Kossuth Square.
