Aachen

The coronation city of Holy Roman Emperors — a dazzling UNESCO cathedral, soothing thermal springs, and gingerbread-scented lanes.

Best time to visit: Spring and autumn suit the cathedral and old town; the Aachener Weihnachtsmarkt (20 Nov–23 Dec), famous for its printen gingerbread, is one of Germany's most beloved.

🎄 Christmas Market

Aachener Weihnachtsmarkt (Aachen Christmas Market)

Aachen's Christmas market fills the Markt, Katschhof and Münsterplatz — the squares between the Rathaus and the cathedral — with around 150 stalls, mulled wine, and the smell of Aachener Printen (the city's dense, spiced gingerbread-style biscuit, sold fresh and warm from specialist stalls found nowhere else quite like this). What sets it apart from other German Christmas markets is the backdrop: stalls and lights are strung directly beneath the UNESCO World Heritage cathedral where Charlemagne is buried, and the illuminated Rathaus towers over the main square — a genuinely cinematic setting best seen after dark. A large lit Christmas tree and a nightly light show on the Rathaus facade are seasonal fixtures.

2026 dates (researched Aug 2026 via the official Aachener Weihnachtsmarkt site): Nov 20 – Dec 23. Daily 11:00–21:00, except Sun Nov 22 (Totensonntag) 18:00–21:00 only, a 'long market night' on Sat Dec 12 until 22:00, and a shorter close (20:00) on the final day, Dec 23.
11:00–21:00 · Free to enter; food, drink and Printen paid per stall
