Strasbourg

A fairytale half-timbered old town on the German border, crowned by one of Europe's tallest cathedrals and one of the world's most famous Christmas markets.

Best time to visit: May–June and September are best for wandering La Petite France and the Grande Ile without summer crowds; late November through December 24 brings the historic Christkindelsmärik Christmas market, one of the oldest and most famous in Europe.

Strasbourg Christmas Market (Christkindelsmarik)

First held in 1570, Strasbourg's Christkindelsmarik is one of the oldest Christmas markets in Europe and has grown into more than a dozen individually themed markets spread across the city's squares: the original Christkindelsmarik on Place Broglie, a grand fir tree over 30 metres tall at Place Kleber, an artisan market around the cathedral, a dedicated 'Petite France' market on Place Benjamin-Zix, and a gourmet market by the Palais Rohan, among others. Expect mulled wine (vin chaud), bredele biscuits, gingerbread (pain d'epices) and Alsatian crafts throughout, with the whole old town strung with lights. It gets extremely busy on December weekends - a weekday evening visit is calmer.

2025 dates were 26 November - 24 December, daily roughly 11:30-21:00 (18:00 close on 24 Dec); 2026 dates confirmed closer to the season.
