Zakopane

Poland's mountain-resort capital at the foot of the Tatras, where a wooden funicular whisks you up for panoramic views and a cable car climbs straight to a 1,987m alpine summit — gateway to hiking, highland folk culture and Poland's most famous mountain lake.

Best time to visit: Summer (Jun–Sep) is best for hiking to Morskie Oko and the high Tatras; winter (Dec–Mar) turns the town into Poland's main ski resort, with snow reliably on the ground.

Zakopane Christmas Market (Jarmark Bożonarodzeniowy)

Zakopane's Christmas market sets up on Plac Niepodległości at the foot of Krupówki, the town's main pedestrian street, with wooden chalets selling local Tatra specialties — grilled oscypek cheese with cranberry sauce, kwaśnica soup, and grzaniec mulled wine — alongside highlander woodwork and wool crafts. The mountain backdrop and traditional Góral architecture give it a different character from the big-city markets further north.

2026 dates: 26 November – 30 December, roughly 10:00–20:00 daily, closed Christmas Day.
