Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Step straight into a fairy tale on cobbled lanes ringed by one of Germany's only fully intact medieval town walls.

Best time to visit: Visit May–June or September–October to see the walled town without the heaviest day-tripper crowds; its Reiterlesmarkt Christmas market has a particularly fairy-tale setting in late November/December.

Reiterlesmarkt (Rothenburg Christmas Market)

Rothenburg's Christmas market takes its name from the "Reiterle," a legendary rider on a white horse said to bring the market to town — a costumed rider on horseback traditionally opens the season. Unlike Germany's larger city markets, the Reiterlesmarkt doesn't need much added decoration: around 60 stalls are set across the Marktplatz, Grüner Markt and the church square by St. James's, inside a town whose half-timbered houses, towers and walls are already medieval and already look like a Christmas card. Daily brass-band music, mulled wine (Glühwein), Franconian bratwurst and Rothenburg's own Schneeballen pastry are the staples, and the town is notably less overrun than Nuremberg's or Cologne's markets, though still busy on weekends. Late afternoon and early evening, once the lights come on and the day-trip crowds thin, is widely considered the best time to experience it.
