Best time to visit: Spring and early autumn are pleasant for the castle and old town; the famous Christkindlesmarkt (27 Nov–24 Dec) is worth timing a winter trip around.

🎄 Christmas Market

Nürnberger Christkindlesmarkt (Nuremberg Christmas Market)

Documented in some form since the mid-17th century, the Christkindlesmarkt is one of the oldest and most famous Christmas markets in the world, filling the Hauptmarkt with roughly 180 wooden stalls built to a uniform red-and-white striped design. It opens each year with the Christkind's prologue, spoken from the Frauenkirche's balcony by a Nuremberg teenager chosen every two years for the role — a tradition dating to the 1930s/40s. Signature foods are Nürnberger Lebkuchen (spiced gingerbread, a protected regional specialty) and Nürnberger Rostbratwürste (small grilled sausages, traditionally sold three-in-a-bun); Glühwein is served in collectible souvenir mugs. A dedicated children's market (Kinderweihnacht) runs alongside on Hans-Sachs-Platz with a vintage carousel and other rides. The market is genuinely central to Nuremberg's civic identity, not just a tourist draw — go in the early evening once the stalls are lit for the classic postcard atmosphere, and expect serious crowds on weekends.
