Best time to visit: Spring and autumn are mild for exploring on foot; the Leipziger Weihnachtsmarkt (one of Germany's oldest and largest) runs 24 November–23 December.

🎄 Christmas Market

Leipziger Weihnachtsmarkt (Leipzig Christmas Market)

First recorded in a 1458 city document, the Leipziger Weihnachtsmarkt is one of the oldest continuously documented Christmas markets in Germany and, with 250-300+ stalls across seven market areas (Markt, Augustusplatz, Nikolaikirchhof, Naschmarkt and more), one of the largest. The centerpiece is the Markt square in front of the Altes Rathaus, framed by a towering spruce and a giant Erzgebirge-style pyramid; a Finnish Christmas village, a medieval market at Naschmarkt, and a historic carousel and Ferris wheel round out the seven zones. Expect Feuerzangenbowle, roasted almonds, Thüringer bratwurst, and handcrafted Erzgebirge wooden ornaments alongside the mulled wine.
