Budapest

A grand Danube capital split between hilltop Buda and elegant Pest, famous for its ornate thermal baths, a neo-Gothic Parliament, and a legendary 'ruin bar' nightlife scene.

Best time to visit: Spring (Apr–May) and autumn (Sept–Oct) are mild and less crowded than summer; the thermal baths are enjoyable year-round but especially atmospheric in winter steam, and the Christmas markets on Vörösmarty tér and by the Basilica run from mid-November into early January.

Budapest Christmas Markets (Vorosmarty ter & Basilica)

Budapest runs two flagship Christmas markets within a short walk of each other: the original, craft-focused fair on Vorosmarty ter, running since the 1990s with wooden chalets selling Hungarian handicrafts, and the Advent Bazilika market on the square in front of St. Stephen's Basilica, better known for its food stalls, mulled wine and a nightly light-and-video projection show mapped onto the basilica's facade. Expect kurtoskalacs (chimney cake) grilled over coals, langos, roasted chestnuts and forralt bor (mulled wine) at both, plus an ice rink and carousel that appear most years near Vorosmarty ter. Exact 2026 dates are announced by the city each autumn, but the markets have consistently run from mid-November into early January in recent years.

Mid-November to New Year. Vörösmarty tér: Sun–Thu 11:00–21:00, Fri–Sat 11:00–22:00; the Basilica market stays open an hour longer and has a light show on the facade every half hour from 17:30. 24 Dec 10:00–14:00, 25–26 Dec 12:00–18:00, 31 Dec until 03:00. Exact 2026 dates are announced in November.
11:00–21:00 · Free to enter; food, drink and goods paid per stall.
